Definition:
Acne is a common type of skin condition marked by congested pores, inflamed pimples, blackheads and white heads.
Symptoms:
Symptoms of acne include:
- Blackheads
- Whiteheads
- Papules
- Pimples
- Clogged pores
- Red blemishes
- Pustules (red bumps with white pus at the tips)
- Cysts
Exams/Testing:
A doctor or dermatologist will typically examine the area of concern to determine whether or not acne is present. Typically a visual assessment of a patient is sufficient to determine if acne is an issue.
Outlook/Prognosis:
A doctor or dermatologist may recommend a variety of different treatment options to combat a patient's acne.
Prescription medications commonly used in the treatment of acne include:
- Topical treatments (such as Differin or Retin-A-Micro)
- Isotretinoin (such as Accutane)
- Antibiotics
- Oral contraceptives (such as Yaz or Ortho Tri-Cyclen)
The following additional treatment options may be recommended:
- Scar treatment (such as micordermabrasion)
- Laser therapy
- Light therapy
- Chemical peels
Patients may also implement the following recommendations to combat acne at home:
- Wash the area where acne is present with gentle cleaners
- Avoid touching your face regularly
- Utilize products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide
- Avoid greasy or fried foods
- Use oil-free cosmetics
- Avoid the use of certain drugs, such as steroids
Causes:
A patient develops acne when pores become clogged with oil, bacteria and dirt.

- Hereditary link
- Use of oily products on the face or hair
