Allergic Reaction
Anaphylaxis, Anaphylactic, Hypersensitivity, Allergies, Allergen, Allergy
An allergic reaction is the body’s response to a foreign substance. A patient who experiences an allergic reaction presents hypersensitivity toward a certain substance, known as an allergen.
In the case of a typical allergic reaction, a physician will often ask a patient about the symptoms experienced and the timing involved. If the allergic reaction is more severe, a patient will typically be taken to the emergency room where a healthcare professional will check the pulse and blood pressure of the patient. Should medications be needed immediately to treat the reaction, an IV will be administered to treat the condition quickly.
Most people respond favorably to medications utilized to treat an allergic reaction. Symptoms such as hives and swelling often dissipate within minutes or hours. It is important for a patient to continually avoid any allergens that trigger an allergic reaction.
