Altace Description:
Altace may be prescribed alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Altace is in a class of medications called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Altace works by decreasing certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more smoothly and the heart to pump blood more efficiently.

- Headache
- Dizziness
- Cough
- Vomiting
- Weakness
- Fainting
- Allergic reaction

Altace Uses:
Altace is prescribed alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. It may reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke in at-risk patients and improve survival rates in patients with heart failure after a heart attack.
Altace Interactions:
Patients should speak with their doctor about the use of any medications, vitamins or supplements before taking Altace.
Before beginning treatment with Altace, patients should consult their doctor if they are taking any of the following medications:
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
- Diuretics
- Lithium
- Potassium supplements
- Gold sodium thiomalate
Patients with a history or current diagnosis of any of following conditions should consult their doctor before treatment with Altace:
- Angioedema
- Bee-sting allergies
- Dialysis
- Dehydration
- Heart problems
- Hyponatremia
- Hypovolemia
- Kidney disease
- Diabetes
- Low blood pressure
- Liver disease
- Scleroderma
- Lupus
Altace Dosage Information:
Typical Dosage Recommendations
Altace dosages may vary among patients and conditions. Patients should take Altace exactly as prescribed by their doctor.
Altace is distributed as a capsule or tablet. Doses range from 1.25 mg to 5 mg.
Patients who cannot swallow their dose of Altace may open a capsule and mix it with applesauce, apple juice, or water.
Missing a Dose of Altace
If you miss a dose of Altace, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule. Do not double a dose to make up for your missed dose.
Altace Overdose
Patients who overdose on Altace may feel lightheaded or faint. Call your doctor immediately if you believe you have overdosed on Altace.

Altace Recall/Black Box Warning Information:
The Black Box warning for Altace warns patients of the risk of taking Altace when pregnant. Taking the medication when pregnant may cause harm or death to a fetus.
Altace was recalled in May 2004 when the medication was mislabeled, as the product dosing was missing on a unit dose package (Recall # D-159-4). The medication was again recalled in June 2009 due to “non-conformance with current good manufacturing practices.” (Recall # D-1137-2009)
