Amisulpride Uses: 

Amisulpride is used in the treatment of schizophrenia, a chronic psychotic disorder characterized by symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, emotional unresponsiveness and social withdrawal.

Amisulpride Interactions: 

Amisulpride should not be used in conjunction with the following medications:

  • Quinidine
  • Disopyramide
  • Amiodarone
  • Sotalol
  • Cisapride
  • Antibiotics such as erythromycin and pentamidine
  • Levodopa
  • Thioridazone
  • Methadone

Amisulpride may also interact with the following medications:

  • Thioridazine
  • Chlorpromazine
  • Trifluperazine

Typical Dosage Recommendations

Amisulpride dosages may vary among patients. Your doctor will establish the size and frequency of your dosage according to your individual needs. Patients should follow the dosage guidelines set by their doctor.

Amisulpride is administered in the form of an oral tablet and an oral solution. Patients generally take a daily dosage between 50 and 800 mg. In some cases, patients may take 1,200 mg a day.

Missing a Dose of Amisulpride

If you forget to take a dose of amisulpride, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosage schedule. Do not consume a double dose of amisulpride to compensate for a missed dose.

Amisulpride Overdose

The most common symptoms of an amisulpride overdose include:

  • Drowsiness
  • Slurred speech

Patients should seek immediate medical attention if they have taken too much of this medication.

Other Warnings

Patients undergoing treatment with amisulpride may be at risk of developing the following serious conditions:

  • Tardive dyskinesia – Tardive dyskinesia is a potentially irreversible condition characterized by involuntary, dyskinetic body movements. Elderly patients, especially elderly women, may be more susceptible to tardive dyskinesia than others. The risk of tardive dyskinesia increases with higher doses and extended use of antipsychotic medications.
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) – NMS is a serious and potentially fatal condition. Common symptoms of NMS include fever, rigid muscles and altered mental state, among others.
