Avalide Description: 

Avalide is approved for the treatment of patients with high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

The medication is a combination of the angiotensin II receptor antagonist irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic. Irbesartan prevents the blood vessels from narrowing, while hydrochlorothiazide works to prevent the absorption of salt into the body.

Avalide Uses: 

Patients take Avalide to treat high blood pressure, a condition also referred to as hypertension. High blood pressure affects 25 percent of adult Americans and can lead to serious heart problems including stroke and heart attack.

Avalide Interactions: 

Patients should discuss the use of and drugs, prescriptions, vitamins or supplements with their doctor prior to beginning treatment with Avalide. Take special care to discuss the following medications:

  • Narcotics
  • Alcohol
  • Barbiturates
  • Antidiabetic drugs
  • Cholestyramine and colestipol
  • Corticosteroids
  • Adrenocorticotropic hormone
  • Lithium
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Avalide Dosage Information: 

Typical Dosage Recommendations

Follow your doctors dosing instructions when taking Avalide.

Avalide may be taken with or without food and may be administered with other antihypertensive agents.

Patients typically begin taking Avalide in 150/12.5mg doses one time daily. Avalide dosages may be increased following one to two week of treatments at a maximum of one 300/25 mg tablet daily as needed.

Missing a Dose of Avalide

If a dose of Avalide is missed, take it as soon as your remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next one to resume your typical dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of Avalide.

Avalide Overdose

If an overdose of Avalide occurs, seek medical attention immediately.

The follow conditions may occur following overdose:

  • Hypotension
  • Tachycardia (abnormally high resting heart rate)
  • Bradycardia (slowed heart rate)

Avalide Recall/Black Box Warning Information: 

A Black Box warning exists for Avalide, warning against the use of the medication by pregnant women. If taken during pregnancy, Avalide can cause harm or death to a fetus. If pregnancy occurs, discontinue use of Avalide as soon as possible.

Avalide was recalled in June and July 2009 because it was found not in conformance with current good manufacturing practices (Recall # D-801-2009, Recall # D-993-2009, Recall # D-1392-2009).
