Avapro

Generic Name:

Irbesartan

Brand Names:

Avapro

Avapro Description:

Avapro belongs to a group of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) and is used in the treatment of hypertension. Hypertension is characterized by a chronic elevation of arterial blood pressure, which increases the workload on the heart and can eventually lead to serious complications such as a stroke or heart failure. Avapro works to decrease blood pressure by inhibiting the chemical angiotensin II, a vasoconstrictor responsible for tightening the blood vessels. By inhibiting this chemical, Avapro reduces the stress placed on the vessels and reduces blood pressure.

Avapro Side Effects:

Avapro is generally well-tolerated by most patients. However, some common side effects may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Upper respiratory infection

For more information, see our Avapro side effects page.

Avapro Uses:

Avapro is used alongside diet and exercise as an additional means of treating hypertension. It is often combined with other high blood pressure medications but it can also be used alone.

Certain individuals are at a greater risk of developing high blood pressure. The risk of developing hypertension increases with age but other risk factors include a history of smoking, obesity, a high-sodium or low- potassium diet, excessive alcohol consumption and ethnicity.

Avapro is also used in the treatment of kidney disease in individuals with type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. A reduction in blood pressure in patients with diabetic nephropathy has shown to slow the progression of the disease.

Avapro Interactions:

Patients should speak with their doctor about the use of any medications, vitamins or supplements before taking Avapro.

In clinical trials, no significant drug interactions were associated with Avapro. However, tell your doctor if you are using any of the following medications as they may increase your blood pressure:

  • Appetite suppressants
  • Asthma medications
  • Decongestants
  • Hay fever medications
