Carisoprodol

Generic Name:

Carisoprodol

Brand Names:

Soma, Carisoprodol

Carisoprodol Description:

Carisoprodol is a muscle relaxant medication indicated for the relief of severe, painful musculoskeletal conditions in adults. It is also available under the brand name Soma, manufactured by Meda Pharmaceuticals Inc. Carisoprodol should only be used for short periods of time of up to three weeks, as its safety has not been established in long-term pain treatment.

Carisoprodol Uses:

Carisoprodol is used for relieving severe discomfort and pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions. Patients who are suffering from acute muscle and bone discomfort and pain from the following causes can use Carisoprodol:

  • Muscle injury
  • Sprains
  • Strains

Muscle sprains and strains share similar symptoms, but involve different parts of the body. A sprain is the result of stretching or tearing of ligaments, which are the bands of tissue that connect bones to each other or to joints. Sprains most often occur in the ankle.

A strain is the result of stretching or tearing of muscle or tendon, which is the tissue that connects muscles to bones. Strains most often occur in the lower back or the hamstring muscle (back of the thigh).

Symptoms of sprains and strains typically include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Limited ability to move the affected area
  • Bruising (sprains)
  • Hearing or feeling a “pop” in the joint at time of injury (sprain)

Severe sprains or strains may include the following symptoms, which indicate the necessity of treatment from a doctor:

  • Inability to walk more than four steps without severe pain
  • Inability to move the affected joint
  • Numbness in any part of the injured area
  • Redness or red streaks spreading out from the injury

Carisoprodol can treat the painful conditions of muscles and bones by acting on the central nervous system. Carisoprodol blocks the signals of pain that are sent between the nerves and the brain. This causes the muscles to relax, providing pain relief of musculoskeletal injuries.

The effectiveness of this medication for long-term use has not been clinically established. It is advised that patients take this medication only for short periods of time (up to three weeks), as muscle pain should be of short duration. Carisoprodol is not intended to take the place of rest, exercise, physical therapy, or other treatments for musculoskeletal discomfort.

Carisoprodol Interactions:

Patients should not take Carisoprodol with any medication that acts as a central nervous system depressant, including the following medications:

  • Tranquilizers
  • Other pain medications
  • Sleeping pills
  • Antihistamines
  • Anesthetics (anesthetics for dental procedures also)
  • Narcotics
  • Epilepsy medications
  • Sedatives
  • Barbiturates
  • Medicines for hay fever
  • Allergy medications
  • Cold medications

Concurrent use of CYP2CI9 medications like fluvoxamine and omeprazole with Carisoprodol can result in increased exposure to Carisprodal and decreased exposure of meprobamate.

Likewise, medications like St. John's Wort and Rifampin can cause the decreased exposure of Carisoprodol and the increased exposure of meprobamate. However, the full impact of these changes and how these changes affect the safety and effectiveness of this medication have not been identified.
