Doxycycline Hyclate
Doryx
Doryx is prescribed to patients to treat a variety of bacterial infections and belongs to a class of antibiotic medications known as tetracycline antibiotics. The medication fights bacteria in the body.
Doryx is also commonly used to control acne.
The most common side effects associated with Doryx use include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Rash
- Diarrhea
- Loss of appetite
- Pale or reddened itchy skin with elevated patches
- Hemolytic anemia

Patients are prescribed Doryx to various bacterial infections including:
- Sexually transmitted infections
- Respiratory tract infections
- Specific bacterial infections
- Ophthalmic infections
- Anthrax, including inhalational anthrax
- Prophylaxis of malaria
The medication is also prescribed to treat acne along with other treatment options.
Doryx is also used to treat certain infections when penicillin use is not recommended.
Certain medications may interact with Doryx. Be sure to discuss the use of prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins and supplements with your doctor before beginning treatment with Doryx.
Do not use Doryx with penicillin medications.
The following antacids may affect the absorption of Doryx:
- Aluminum
- Calcium
- Magnesium
- Bismuth subsalicylate
Additional medications may interact with Doryx. Talk with your doctor about the use of Doryx with other medicines.
The following medications may decrease the half-life (time it takes for Doryx to decay) of Doryx:
- Barbiturates
- Carbamazepine
- Phenytoin
Typical Dosage Recommendations
Take Doryx according to the dosing recommendations provided by your doctor.
Doryx is available in 75, 100 and 150 mg tablets.
Adults are typically prescribed 200 mg of Doryx, taken in tow doses of 100 mg, once every 12 hours for the first day. Following the first day of treatment, patients will typically take 100 mg daily. In the case of a more severe infection, a doctor may recommend that a patient takes 100 mg every 12 hours.
Missing a Dose of Doryx
If a dose of Doryx is missed, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, simply skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regularly scheduled time. Do not take a double dose of Doryx.
Doryx Overdose
If a Doryx overdose occurs, seek emergency medical attention.

No recalls or Black Box warnings exist for Doryx.
Other Warnings:
Doryx may cause harm to a fetus and should not be used by pregnant women or children. Use of Doryx during pregnancy may cause an infant to develop permanent discoloration of teeth if used during the last half of pregnancy. Children under the age of 8 years may also experience this effect following the use of Doryx.
