Hallucinations

Alternative Names:

Delusion, dream, aberration, illusion, apparition

Definition:

A hallucination is the false perception of something. A patient believes something is there when, in actuality, it is not present.

Symptoms:

A person experiencing a hallucination may hear voices that are not speaking, see objects, people, patterns or lights that are not present, or feel a crawling sensation on the skin when nothing is triggering the feeling.

Exams/Testing:

If a patient experiences a hallucination, contacting a medical professional right away is important. A physical examination will likely be conducted and a neurological exam may be performed. A CT scan or MRI may be completed as well as blood and urine tests or an electroencephalogram.

Outlook/Prognosis:

The outlook for patients who experience hallucinations vary greatly as hallucinations may be caused by drugs, prescription medications and certain medical conditions. The cause of the hallucination as well as treatment administered to the patient will affect a patient’s overall prognosis.
