Indapamide
Indapamide
Lozol (discontinued)
Indapamide is a diuretic, or water pill, used in the treatment of high blood pressure and heart failure in patients with heart disease. Indapamide helps relieve the symptoms of fluid retention and swelling (edema) associated with the condition.
Most patients experience fatigue and increased urination (frequency and amount) when starting treatment with indapamide. These side effects generally subside as treatment progresses.
For more information, see our indapamide side effects page.
Indapamide works to reduce the amount of sodium and chloride absorbed by the body and increase the amount of urine needed to remove them. This helps reduce water retention and decrease swelling and edema in some patients. It also reduces fluid circulation in the body and the amount of stress placed on the arteries, resulting in a decrease in blood pressure.

Typical Dosage Recommendations
Indapamide dosages may vary among patients. Your doctor will establish the size and frequency of your dosage according to your individual needs. It is important to follow the guidelines established by your doctor.
Indapamide is generally prescribed to be taken as 2.5-5 mg, once a day with food. It is usually recommended to be taken in the morning after breakfast, as an increased need to urinate may interfere with sleep if doses are taken at night.
Missing a Dose of Indapamide
If you miss a dose of indapamide, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and wait to return to your regular dosing schedule.
Indapamide Overdose
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medication. An overdose of indapamide may result in dehydration, reduced blood volume, low blood pressure, electrolyte imbalance or other symptoms.

Indapamide carries a bolded warning stating that the medication can cause severe water loss and electrolyte depletion if used in excessive amounts. Patients should be closely monitored, and dosage regimens must be individualized to fit each patient's needs.
