Lidoderm Lidocaine Patch
Lidocaine
Lidoderm
Lidoderm (Lidocaine Patch 5%) is used to provide pain relief to patients suffering from after-shingles pain. The patch works as a topical medication to treat pain by penetrating into the blood to stop pain signals from the nerves from being transmitted to the brain.
Lidoderm is prescribed to patients suffering from after-shingles pain. The medication is available in the form of a patch to be applied on the skin where the pain is experienced by the patient.
Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral condition caused by the varicella zoster virus. The condition causes a painful rash, typically around the middle of the back, wrapping around to the breastbone.
Symptoms of shingles include:
- Pain
- Itching
- Burning
- Numbness
- Tingling
- Red rash
- Blisters
Patients may experience pain once a shingles rash dissipates. If pain is felt in the area where the rash once was, a patient may have after-shingles pain, also known as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Patients with PHN typically feel burning, itching, aching or a sharp pain where the rash was one present. Extreme skin sensitivity is typically the most bothersome symptom of PHN.
Certain medications may negatively interact with the Lidoderm patch. Speak with your doctor about any drugs, prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins or supplements you are taking.
Beta-blockers, cimetidine, antiarrhythmics, or succinycholine medications may cause adverse reactions when used with the Lidoderm patch. Discuss the risks with your doctor.
Typical Dosage Recommendations
Patients should use the Lidoderm patch as prescribed by a doctor.
The patch should be applied to intact skin only and should never be administered to broken, cracked or damaged skin.
To apply the patch, remove the liner and apply to the pained area.
Patients may wear the patch for up to 12 hours a day. If pain, burning or itching occurs, remove the patch.
When discarding the patch, fold the patch in half, pressing the sticky sides together to avoid contamination to others, including children and pets.
Missing a Dose
If a dose of the Lidoderm patch is missed, place the patch on the area as soon as you remember. Do not use the patch for more than 12 hours day. Patients should also refrain from using more than three patches at a time.
