Lumigan
Lumigan belongs to a group of drugs known as synthetic prostamide analogs and is used in the treatment of high intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Lumigan works to reduce IOP by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor, which is a fluid in the eyes that causes abnormal IOP when present in excessive levels. By reducing IOP, Lumigan decreases the risk of visual field loss associated with glaucoma.

Lumigan is used to treat IOP and reduce the risk of visual field loss associated with open-angle glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma is an eye disease characterized by the loss of peripheral vision. Many patients do not initially realize they have glaucoma, as the loss of vision associated with the condition is very gradual. Certain factors such as ocular hypertension, race, age, a family history of glaucoma, extensive steroid use and high blood pressure may increase the risk of developing glaucoma.
While glaucoma is not curable, Lumigan is intended to inhibit the condition’s progression and reduce the risk of developing the condition in patients with ocular hypertension. Lumigan has also been used to increase the growth of eyelashes in some patients.
Lumigan may be used in conjunction with other liquid eye drops intended to help lower IOP. However, the administration of the drugs should be conducted more than five minutes apart.
Typical Dosage Recommendations
Lumigan is administered in the form of a liquid eye drop. Patients generally administer a single drop in the affected eye once a day. Patients should not administer more than a single drop of Lumigan per day, as this may decrease the effectiveness of the medication.
Patients should not allow the tip of the dispenser to make contact with the eye, as this may increase the risk of developing an eye infection. Patients who wear contact lenses should remove them before administering Lumigan. They may be reinserted 15 minutes later.
Missing a Dose of Lumigan
If you forget to take a dose of Lumigan, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosage schedule.
Lumigan Overdose
While an overdose of Lumigan is not expected to result in dangerous complications, patients should contact their doctor or seek medical attention if they believe they may have overdosed on this medication.
