Lysteda
Lysteda is a non-hormonal medication that is prescribed to treat menorrhagia, or heavy menstrual bleeding in women. Lysteda is an antifibrinolytic agent that helps blood to clot, reducing the amount of heavy bleeding that occurs during menstruation. The medication is approved for use in women ages 18 and older.
Report any of the following symptoms to your doctor, as they may indicate serious side effects of the medication:
- Changes in vision
- Unusual change in bleeding pattern
- No change in heavy bleeding

Lysteda works to stabilize a certain protein in the body that helps the blood to clot. The medication helps to alleviate heavy menstrual bleeding that that interferes with a patient's social, leisure, and physical activities. Lysteda does not stop menstruation, does not treat pre-menstrual symptoms, is not birth control, and does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
Tell your doctor about all prescription and non-prescription medications you may be taking along with Lysteda, including vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products. The following drugs may interact with this medication:
- Anti-inhibitor coagulant complex
- Blood clotting or blood thinning medications
- Certain leukemia medications
- Chlorpromazine
- Hormonal birth control pills, the patch, vaginal ring, or intrauterine devices
- Tretinoin
Typical Dosage Recommendations
Lysteda dosages may vary among patients. Your doctor will establish the size and frequency of your dosage according to your individual needs. It is important to follow the guidelines established by your doctor.
Lysteda is taken for five days, only while you have your monthly period. A doctor will generally prescribe the medication as two tablets taken three times a day, with doses taken at least six hours apart. Do not take Lysteda for more than five days in a row.
Missing a Dose of Lysteda
If you miss a dose of Lysteda, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and wait to return to your regular dosing schedule. Be sure to wait at least six hours in between doses.
Lysteda Overdose
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medication. Symptoms of Lysteda overdose include:
- Change in mental state
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Rash
- Vision loss
- Vomiting
