



Nausea
Definition:
Nausea is an uneasy or ill feeling of the stomach, usually with an urge to vomit. Nausea is a common symptom that can be caused by a variety of conditions and medications.
Symptoms:
The uneasy feeling associated with nausea is usually not a serious sign. The following are situations when nausea may be a sign of a serious condition:
- When nausea accompanies vomiting that lasts for more than 24 hours
- Patient suspects poisoning
- Severe abdominal pain
- Headache and stiff neck
- Dehydration – dry mouth, infrequent or dark urination
- When nausea symptoms last longer than one month
- Unexplained weight loss accompanies nausea symptoms
Exams/Testing:
Nausea can be a sign of several conditions or side effects. Your doctor may check you for a variety of conditions depending on the severity, length, and other symptoms accompanying your feeling of nausea.
Outlook/Prognosis:
Symptoms of nausea usually subside or can be treated with certain over-the-counter or prescription medications.
