Bodybuilding Website Recalls 65 Products with Possible Steroid Ingredients

On November 3, 2009, the company Bodybuilding.com announced a nationwide and international recall of more than 60 dietary supplements sold from its Web site, explaining that the products may contain ingredients the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies as illegal steroids. The FDA urged the company to issue the recall of products containing ingredients known as Superdrol, Madol, Tren, Androstenedione, and Turinabol.

To date, the FDA has received no reports of adverse effects from the recalled products, but the company and the FDA urge consumers to stop taking the supplements immediately and contact both a doctor and the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online or by phone if any negative effects are noticed.

Negative effects of steroid-containing products include:

• Acute liver injury
• Shrinkage of testes, infertility, and breast enlargement in men
• Masculinization in women
• Short stature in children
• Higher rate of drug or alcohol abuse
• Adverse effect on blood lipid levels
• Increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death

As part of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, a supplement does not have to be tested by the FDA to determine safety before being placed on the shelves.
