Phenazopyridine is an analgesic medication used to treat common symptoms of urinary tract infections such as pain, burning sensations and irritation. Phenazopyridine is not an antibiotic or antiviral medication and will not treat the underlying cause of urinary tract infections. Phenazopyridine is available over-the-counter.

Phenazopyridine is used to alleviate common symptoms of urinary tract infections. Urinary tract infections occur when foreign substances such as bacteria enter the urinary tract and multiply. Women are more likely than men to suffer from urinary tract infections. While urinary tract infections can be painful, most are not dangerous or life-threatening conditions.
Phenazopyridine may interact with diabetic urine tests.
Phenazopyridine is not accompanied by any other drug interaction warnings. However, patients should talk with their doctor about the use of all other medications, vitamins or supplements before initiating use of phenazopyridine.
Typical Dosage Recommendations
Patients should take phenazopyridine exactly as directed by their doctor.
Phenazopyridine is administered in the form of an oral tablet or liquid. The medication is usually taken three times a day until relief from symptoms is achieved.
Phenazopyridine should be taken with food.
Missing a Dose of Phenazopyridine
If you forget to take a dose of phenazopyridine, you can take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal dosage schedule. Do not consume a double dose of this medication to compensate for a missed dose.
Phenazopyridine Overdose
Seek medical attention if you believe you have taken too much phenazopyridine.
Phenazopyridine does not carry any black box warnings.
Recalls
In 2005, Quality Care Products, LLC recalled certain lots of phenazopyridine medications due to concerns that the products were not produced in conformance with appropriate quality standards. Lake Erie Medical & Surgical also recalled certain lots of phenazopyridine medications in 2005 due to similar concerns.
In 2008, Actavis Totowa LLC recalled certain lots of phenazopyridine medications because the products were not in conformance with the Good Manufacturing Practice standards established by the FDA. The actions constituted a Class II recall, and the medications did not pose a significant risk to consumers.
