Reglan Side Effects

Common side effects associated with Reglan include:

  • Breast swelling or tenderness
  • Changes in menstruation
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent urination
  • Headache
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea
  • Restlessness

It is also possible to suffer from allergic reactions while taking Reglan. Signs of an allergic reaction include difficulty breathing, hives, and swelling of the face, tongue, lips, or throat.

More serious side effects associated with Reglan that require immediate medical attention include:

Patients who have discontinued the use of Reglan also commonly suffer from withdrawal symptoms, including dizziness, headache, and nervousness.

A number of serious conditions have been linked to Reglan use. Some of these conditions that could develop following Reglan treatment include:

  • Agranulocytosis (failure of the bone marrow to make enough white blood cells)
  • Aldosteronism (syndrome of high blood pressure and low blood potassium levels)
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS)
  • Seizures
  • Tachycardia
  • Tardive dyskinesia (disorder causing involuntary movements, especially in the lower face)
  • Endocrine disturbances
  • Liver problems
  • Disorders similar to Parkinson’s disease

Reglan has been show to lead to depression and/or suicidal thoughts in patients with a history of depression, as well as those without a history of the condition. Symptoms of depression have ranged from mild to severe.

Specific precautions

It is not recommended to take Reglan for a treatment period greater than 12 weeks.

Withdrawal symptoms may develop after taking Reglan, even after taking the recommended dosage for the recommended length of time.

Reglan is not recommended for patients under 18 years of age.

Conditions or medications that may be affected by the drug or interact negatively with the drug

Patients with the following conditions are not advised to take Reglan:

  • Stomach or small bowel conditions such as an obstruction, perforation, or hemorrhage
  • Pheochromocytoma (a tumor causing hypertension)
  • Epilepsy or a history of seizures
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Cirrhosis
  • Congestive heart failure
  • History of depression or suicidal thoughts
What to Avoid When Taking the Drug: 

Food/alcohol

Avoid alcohol while taking Reglan.

Certain activities

Until you know how Reglan will affect your body, avoid driving or engaging in other activities that could become dangerous if you feel drowsy or have impaired coordination.
