Trileptal Description: 

Trileptal is prescribed to adults for the treatment of partial seizures alone or in combination with additional treatment. Patients aged 4 years and older with epilepsy are prescribed Trileptal to treat partial seizures. Patients aged 2 and above with epilepsy are prescribed Trileptal in combination with other medications.

The medication treats patients with epilepsy by controlling seizures. Trileptal works by decreasing nerve impulses and is classified as an antiepileptic (anticonvulsant) drug.

Trileptal Side Effects: 

The most common side effects associated with Trileptal use include:

  • Abnormal gait
  • Abnormal vision
  • Dizziness
  • Double vision
  • Drowsiness
  • Facial tics
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of coordination of muscle movements
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Tremor
  • Vomiting

Trileptal Uses: 

Children aged 2 and above are prescribed Trileptal alone or in combination with other medications to treat partial seizures associated with epilepsy. Epilepsy is a chronic brain disorder that affects approximately one in 100 people in the United States.

Trileptal Interactions: 

Certain medications may interact with Trileptal. Be sure to discuss the use of prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins and supplements with your doctor before beginning treatment with Trileptal.

Take special care to discuss use of the following medications which are typically not recommended with Trileptal treatment:

  • Selegiline
  • Tolvaptan

Trileptal Dosage Information: 

Typical Dosage Recommendations

Take Trileptal according to the dosing recommendations provided by your doctor.

Trileptal is available in oral suspension and tablet form.

Patients taking the oral suspension form of Trileptal should shake the bottle and prepare the dose immediately afterward. Use the supplied oral dosing syringe to withdraw the proper dose of the medication. Trileptal oral suspension may be mixed with a small glass or water or swallowed directly from the syringe.

Be sure to close the bottle and rinse the syringe with warm water following use. The oral suspension form of Trileptal should be used within seven weeks of opening the bottle.

Trileptal may be taken with or without food. Tablets are available in 150 mg, 300 mg, and 600 mg tablets.

Missing a Dose of Trileptal

If a dose of Trileptal is missed, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, simply skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regularly scheduled time. Do not take a double dose of Trileptal.

Trileptal Overdose

If an overdose of Trileptal occurs, seek emergency medical attention.

Trileptal Recall/Black Box Warning Information: 

Trileptal 150 mg tablets were recalled due to the possibility of a product package mix-up in November 2006 (Recall # D-280-7).

Trileptal 300 mg/5 ml suspension was recalled in August 2009, as the medication was found not in conformance with good market practices (Recall # D-1828-2009).
