Vigamox
Moxifloxacin hydrochloride ophthalmic solution
Vigamox
Vigamox is an optical solution used to treat the most common type of eye infection, bacterial conjunctivitis or “pink eye.” Vigamox is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that destroys the bacteria causing the condition.
In some patients, severe hypersensitivity reactions have occurred with quinolone treatment, with reactions including loss of consciousness, swelling of the face or throat, blocked airways, and itching. If an allergic reaction to moxifloxacin occurs, discontinue Vigamox use and seek emergency medical treatment.
For more information, see our Vigamox side effects page.
Vigamox is an eye drop treatment used to cure conjunctivitis, the most common type of eye infection that involves an infection or inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the eyeball.
Conjunctivitis can be infectious or noninfectious. Infectious conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria or viruses, but conjunctivitis can also be caused by allergies, chemicals, or some underlying health conditions.
Conjunctivitis is a highly contagious disease, and although it is not a serious medical condition, it can be annoying and irritating. The main symptoms of conjunctivitis include:
- Pain, itching, swelling, redness, or watery discharge in the eye
- Sensitivity to light
- White or yellow discharge in the eye that may become crusty
- Swelling in the preauricular lymph node (the area of the sideburns)
Treatment with antibacterial eye drops such as Vigamox is indicated to reduce the extent of the inflammation and control the chances of spreading the infection.
Tell your doctor about all prescription and non-prescription medications you may be taking along with Vigamox, including vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products.
Typical Dosage Recommendations
For adults and children over 1 year of age, Vigamox is prescribed as one drop applied in the affected eye or eyes three times a day. Treatment generally lasts for 7 days.
Missing a Dose of Vigamox
If you miss a dose of Vigamox, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and wait to return to your regular dosing schedule.
Vigamox Overdose
Prolonged or excessive use of Vigamox and other anti-infective agents can result in an overgrowth of fungus or a superinfection. Discontinue use if this occurs and seek medical treatment.
