Xyrem
Xyrem belongs to a group of drugs known as central nervous system depressants. It is used to reduce symptoms associated with narcolepsy, such as daytime sleepiness and sudden muscle weakness. While the exact mechanisms of Xyrem are unknown, the medication is believed to interact with gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) receptors in the brain.
Common side effects associated with Xyrem include:
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Headache
- Loss of bladder control
- Nausea
- Vomiting
For more information see our Xyrem side effects page.
Xyrem is used to decrease the symptoms of narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a neurological disorder in which patients experience excessive daytime drowsiness and uncontrollable bouts of sleep. Many narcolepsy patients also experience cataplexy, a sudden and temporary loss of muscle tone that can lead to temporary paralysis.
The active ingredient in Xyrem is Gamma-hydroxybutyrate, a substance that is often intentionally abused for the purpose of date rape and other illegal acts. Inappropriate use of Xyrem, especially when combined with alcohol or other depressants, may lead to serious side effects such as seizures, loss of consciousness and possibly death.
Patients should speak with their doctor about the use of any medications, vitamins or supplements before taking Xyrem.
The following medications may adversely interact with Xyrem:
- Antidepressants
- Antipsychotics
- Anxiety medication
- Other central nervous center depressants
- Sedatives
- Sleeping pills
- Tranquilizers
Typical Dosage Recommendations
Xyrem dosage instructions may vary among patients. Because Xyrem may be habit-forming, you should only take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor.
Xyrem is an oral solution taken at night in two doses. The first dose must be taken at least two hours after food consumption. Patients starting treatment with Xyrem will typically take a total daily amount of 4.5 g, divided into two doses of 2.25 g. The doses should be taken 2 ½ - 4 hours apart. Both doses should be taken with ¼ cup of water.
The first dose should be taken right before going to bed. Patients may need to set an alarm to ensure they awaken to take the second dose.
Your doctor may alter your dosage amount as needed.
Missing a Dose of Xyrem
Never take two doses of Xyrem at once to make up for a missed dose.
