Wegovy Lawsuit

Wegovy lawsuits involve claims that the drug caused serious injuries, including stomach paralysis and sudden vision loss. These lawsuits allege that Wegovy’s manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, failed to warn about the risks. If you developed complications while taking Wegovy, you may qualify for a lawsuit.

Who Is Eligible To File a Wegovy Lawsuit?

If you used Wegovy for diabetes or weight loss and later faced serious health issues like severe stomach pain, frequent vomiting, digestive problems or vision loss, you might be eligible to file a Wegovy lawsuit. These issues must have started while you were taking the medication or soon after stopping, and a doctor must link them to Wegovy or a similar drug.

Wegovy NAION Lawsuit Eligibility

Wegovy lawsuits claim the drug can cause a serious eye problem called non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), which may lead to vision loss or blindness. Adults who used semaglutide shots for diabetes, weight loss or other medical reasons and later had sudden vision changes may qualify to file a Wegovy lawsuit.

Eligibility Requirements for a Wegovy NAION Lawsuit
  • You have used Wegovy at some point since 2018.
  • You suffered significant vision loss or NAION.
  • The drug's maker did not sufficiently warn you about this risk.

“These lawsuits are specific to an NAION diagnosis, which can happen in one eye or it can happen in both eyes, but it is a specific diagnosis that is an injury to the optic nerve,” Danielle Gold, an attorney with Weitz & Luxenberg, told Drugwatch. “Obviously, people can have blurry vision or vision impairment for a whole host of reasons, but these lawsuits do involve a specific diagnosis of NAION.”

Wegovy Gastroparesis Lawsuit Eligibility

You may be eligible for a Wegovy lawsuit if you developed severe stomach problems like gastroparesis. These cases often involve people who used semaglutide and then developed severe gastrointestinal issues that sent them to the hospital.

Eligibility Requirements for a Wegovy Gastroparesis or GI Injury Lawsuit
  • Took Wegovy for Type 2 diabetes, weight loss or other conditions.
  • Suffered persistent vomiting, ileus, gastroparesis (stomach paralysis) or other severe gastrointestinal injuries.
  • Needed at least one overnight hospital stay while on the drug or within six months of stopping.

Required Medical Records and Proof of Use

If you’re considering filing a Wegovy lawsuit, gather all your important documents before contacting a lawyer. Having everything organized will help the attorney better understand your situation and determine whether your case meets the requirements.

Evidence To Gather for a Wegovy NAION Lawsuit
  • A timeline showing when you started the medication, noticed symptoms and stopped taking it.
  • Eye doctor records, including any diagnoses of vision problems.
  • Insurance statements, bills and records of lost work or disability due to vision issues.
  • Medical records showing that doctors prescribed Wegovy to you, with usage dates and reasons for the prescription.
  • Pharmacy records or labels showing your name and dosage.
  • Test results or images related to your vision, along with notes from health care providers.
Evidence To Gather for a Wegovy Gastroparesis or Other GI Injury Lawsuit
  • A list of GLP-1 medications you've taken (like Ozempic and Wegovy) with start and stop dates.
  • A personal timeline of symptoms and hospital visits, along with any documentation of lost wages or expenses.
  • Emergency room visit records for severe symptoms like nausea or abdominal pain.
  • Medical records from hospital visits for issues like vomiting, stomach problems or blood clots.
  • Notes and reports from your GI specialist, including test results and imaging scans.
  • Pharmacy records and any instructions from your doctors.

Primary Injuries in Wegovy Lawsuits: Gastroparesis and NAION

Wegovy lawsuits tend to fall into two types: serious gastrointestinal injuries and sudden vision loss. Lawsuits claim Wegovy can disrupt digestion, cause long-term complications and, in the case of NAION, lead to permanent vision loss.

Stomach Paralysis (Gastroparesis) and Ileus

Gastroparesis occurs when the stomach muscles don’t contract normally, leading to slow or incomplete emptying. It can affect digestion, leading to nausea, vomiting, pain, blood sugar problems and nutritional issues.

Gastroparesis Symptoms
  • Acid reflux
  • Belly bloating
  • Belly pain
  • Changes in blood sugar
  • Feeling full quickly or long after meals
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss or malnutrition

Ileus occurs when your intestines temporarily stop the muscle contractions that usually propel food along. Nothing blocks the intestines, but food, gas and fluids get stuck, causing bloating, constipation and nausea.

Ileus Symptoms
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Constipation
  • Dehydration
  • Gas
  • Nausea and vomiting

Vision Loss (NAION)

NAION occurs when reduced blood flow injures the optic nerve, usually causing sudden, painless vision loss in one eye. It often appears upon waking and stays stable afterward.

NAION Symptoms
  • Painless vision loss
  • Sudden vision loss in one eye
  • Symptoms often noticed upon waking
  • Vision usually stays stable after the loss

There are no effective treatments for NAION, and the condition is permanent.

Latest Studies Linking Wegovy To Severe Injuries

Recent research has highlighted potential safety concerns with Wegovy, focusing on two serious conditions: NAION and gastroparesis. Multiple studies from 2023 to 2025 have shown that semaglutide users — whether for diabetes or weight loss — may face higher risks of these injuries than users of other diabetes or weight-loss medications.

Lawsuits related to Wegovy have increased due to concerns about serious eye and stomach issues, largely stemming from this research. As awareness of these risks grows, more people are filing claims regarding potential side effects.

2025 Wegovy Study Shows Increase in NAION Risk for Diabetes Patients

A 2025 study in JAMA Ophthalmology investigated the risk of NAION in people with Type 2 diabetes using semaglutide (Wegovy). The multicenter study examined 37.1 million adults across 14 databases.

The study’s results indicated “a modest increase” in NAION risks for semaglutide users with Type 2 diabetes. However, researchers noted that semaglutide’s increased risk factor was “smaller than that previously reported” and urged further studies to better understand this link.

2024 Wegovy Study Finds NAION Risk for Weight Loss and Diabetes Patients

Another JAMA Ophthalmology study from 2024 found a higher risk of NAION in people prescribed semaglutide, regardless of whether they had Type 2 diabetes or were overweight.

After adjusting for age and health conditions, semaglutide users developed NAION more frequently than those on other diabetes or weight-loss medications. The rates were several times higher among semaglutide users, indicating a strong association.

JAMA Research Letter Links Semaglutide To Gastroparesis Risk

A 2023 research letter in JAMA found that users of weight loss medications semaglutide and liraglutide, the active ingredient in Victoza and Saxenda, experienced gastroparesis nearly three times as often as those on bupropion-naltrexone (Contrave), another weight-loss drug.

Wegovy Litigation Status and History

The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation consolidated Wegovy lawsuits about gastrointestinal injuries into a federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) in Pennsylvania. In addition, the New Jersey Supreme Court created a multicounty litigation (MCL) for Wegovy NAION lawsuits.

MDLs and MCLs allow courts to combine several similar cases in a single court, making the legal process more efficient. MDLs are used in federal courts, while MCLs are used in state courts.

MDL 3094: The Gastroparesis Consolidation

In February 2024, a federal panel created MDL 3094 to combine lawsuits from people who claim they developed gastroparesis and other serious stomach problems after taking GLP-1 drugs, including Wegovy. As of December 2025, there were 2,947 lawsuits pending in the gastroparesis MDL.

These cases all raised similar questions about whether the drugmakers knew their medications could cause gastroparesis and other digestive injuries, and whether the manufacturers failed to provide proper warnings of the risk.

The Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation decided to centralize the lawsuits in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania to make pretrial work more efficient, avoid duplicate efforts, ensure consistent rulings and help manage the large number of cases.

Emerging Wegovy Vision-Loss Lawsuits Consolidated in New Jersey

In 2025, the New Jersey Supreme Court consolidated Wegovy lawsuits involving NAION complications in an MCL with other lawsuits regarding GLP-1 drugs and vision loss. The Supreme Court consolidated the lawsuits in the Bergen County Superior Court under Judge Gregg A. Padavano.

“The reason we can file cases in New Jersey state court and keep them in New Jersey state court is because Novo Nordisk is a New Jersey-based company,” Gold said. “It’s always beneficial to be a part of a coordinated action because these cases are often very expensive to litigate.”

There were 21 Wegovy NAION lawsuits pending in New Jersey state courts when attorneys requested the consolidation in June 2025.

Is Wegovy Recalled?

There is no current FDA recall for Wegovy. However, there have been safety concerns and warnings about counterfeit versions and compounded semaglutide products. These alternatives are not FDA-approved and may be unsafe due to dosing errors. The FDA has issued warnings against using these unapproved versions and recommends that patients obtain their medication only from a licensed pharmacy with a prescription.

FDA and Wegovy Label Updates

While there have been no FDA recalls for Wegovy, the agency has required six changes to the drug’s label since 2022, including three recent updates.

Significant Changes To Wegovy’s Label
Oct. 14, 2025:
Novo Nordisk added a warning about serious gastrointestinal complications in Wegovy’s postmarketing experience, including intestinal obstruction and severe constipation.
Nov. 27, 2024:
The FDA required Novo Nordisk to add a new subsection to the warning on Wegovy’s label about severe gastrointestinal adverse reactions. Also, this label update featured a precaution against prescribing Wegovy to patients with severe gastroparesis.
Nov. 1, 2024
Novo Nordisk updated Wegovy’s label to include a warning about the risk of pulmonary aspiration (accidentally inhaling food, liquid or stomach contents) during general anesthesia or deep sedation.

What To Do if You’ve Suffered an Injury on Wegovy

You should never stop taking Wegovy or any other prescription medication without first talking to your doctor and working out a plan to stop or change your medication. However, if you experience certain symptoms indicating possible gastrointestinal issues or vision loss, contact your health care provider immediately.

Wegovy Gastrointestinal Complications

If you have severe stomach problems while on Wegovy or another semaglutide drug, treat it as an urgent issue. Get medical care first, then worry about possible legal steps later.

What To Do if You Experience Gastrointestinal Issues While Taking Wegovy
  • Call your doctor or 911 if you have nonstop vomiting, severe belly pain or trouble breathing.
  • Go to the ER and tell them you take Wegovy or a similar drug.
  • Follow all tests and treatment plans, even if it means hospital admission.

Wegovy Sudden Vision Loss

Sudden vision changes, especially in one eye, can be an emergency and may have links to NAION in people taking Wegovy and similar drugs.

What To Do if You Experience Sudden Vision Loss While Taking Wegovy
  • If you notice sudden blurry, dim or missing areas of vision, seek medical care immediately.
  • Go to an ER or emergency eye clinic and say you use Wegovy or another semaglutide medicine.
  • Ask to see an eye specialist (ophthalmologist or neuro‑ophthalmologist) as soon as possible.
  • Do not drive yourself; have someone take you.

Wegovy Injury Evidence

Keep thorough evidence of your Wegovy use, including prescriptions, symptoms, treatments, medical records and bills.

Immediately Preserve Evidence and Records
  • Ask for copies of your discharge papers and test results.
  • Write down when symptoms started, which drug you used and every hospital or doctor visit.
  • Keep all eye exam reports and imaging, and note when the vision change started and which drug you were taking.

Potential Wegovy Settlements and Compensation

While there are no major Wegovy settlements yet, legal experts estimate future payouts could range from about $100,000 to over $1 million, depending on the strength of the case and the seriousness of the injury. Claims involving blindness may result in higher compensation than those involving temporary gastrointestinal problems.

Factors That May Affect Settlement Amounts
Economic Losses:
Medical bills, lost wages and long-term care needs often affect payouts.
Legal Strategy:
Whether cases proceed individually or in consolidated litigation can influence outcomes.
Proof of a Link Between Wegovy and Your Injuries:
Strong medical evidence is essential.
Severity of Injuries:
Lifelong injuries usually lead to higher payouts.

FAQs About Wegovy Lawsuits

Is there a Wegovy class action?
There is no active Wegovy class action lawsuit in the United States. Instead, a federal panel has consolidated thousands of individual lawsuits into a federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) claiming that GLP-1 drugs, including Wegovy, caused severe gastrointestinal issues like gastroparesis. There is also a pending multicounty litigation (MCL) in New Jersey, claiming the medications caused NAION. A class action combines many similar individual claims into one case, while an MDL coordinates related cases across courts for pretrial efficiency.
What is the statute of limitations?
The statute of limitations is a deadline for filing a Wegovy lawsuit. It's usually two to three years, though it can vary by state and case specifics. The timeframe typically starts from when the medication injured you or when you realized the medication caused the injury. Some states may have different periods — some as short as one year — so it's important to consult a lawyer to confirm the deadline for your situation.
Can I file if I am still taking the drug?
You can file a lawsuit over Wegovy even if you’re still taking it, but experts recommend considering stopping the medication due to potential health risks. You should not stop taking it without first talking to your doctor. To file, you need to have experienced serious side effects with medical evidence linking them to the drug, and you must do so within the legal time limit. Consulting a lawyer is essential for guidance.
