Is There a Depo-Provera Settlement?
In June 2026, Pfizer reached a settlement agreement with attorneys representing people who have filed Depo-Provera lawsuits.
More than 5,500 lawsuits have been filed in the Depo shot multidistrict litigation over claims that the contraceptive injection is tied to the development of meningiomas, a typically benign but potentially serious type of tumor in the lining of the brain.
Specific details for the settlement are still being finalized, but it is expected to resolve much of the litigation. In the meantime, lawyers are continuing to accept and file new cases for people who could be eligible for compensation.
The settlement agreement came much faster than is often common for dangerous product litigations like this one. It can sometimes take years and multiple trials before an agreement is reached.
The earliest Depo shot lawsuits were filed in late 2024 after a study published in the BMJ found that people who took the birth control shot could be upwards of five times more likely to develop a meningioma. None of these cases has advanced to trial yet.
In light of the settlement news, an early trial scheduled for December 2026 was removed from the calendar.
The deal is now being finalized as new cases continue to pour in. More than 3,000 new Depo-Provera lawsuits were filed in the first half of 2026 alone.
How Much Could a Depo-Provera Settlement Be Worth?
Some members of the legal industry have estimated that the payout for an individual Depo-Provera settlement could range from $75,000 to $1.5 million or more.
These figures are speculative. The settlement agreement is still being finalized, and its terms have not been publicly disclosed.
We’re still waiting to hear more on which cases will be eligible and what individual payouts will look like.
What Factors Determine a Depo-Provera Lawsuit Payout?
A Depo-Provera settlement payout will likely depend on the individual details of each case. Payout amounts can vary widely in lawsuits like these.
In dangerous product litigations, the strongest cases typically receive the largest payouts. This can include cases with the most severe injuries or the most compelling evidence.
In the Depo-Provera litigation, that may mean cases in which meningiomas caused severe, life-altering symptoms.
While a global settlement has been reached in these cases, finalizing payouts can take some time. When a settlement is agreed to, it must typically receive approval from a judge.
Once the settlement receives court approval, payouts can begin.
Even as the global settlement process plays out, some individual lawsuits may still be able to negotiate their own settlements. While more than 5,000 lawsuits are active in federal court and may be covered by the settlement, many others are pending in state court.
Your lawyer can help you determine what path is best for your case.
Who Qualifies for a Depo-Provera Settlement Claim?
Eligibility terms for the Depo-Provera settlement have not yet been disclosed. The criteria for qualification will likely be revealed after that agreement is finalized.
While we’re still waiting to learn more about the Depo shot settlement, many agreements for dangerous product lawsuits do not distribute payouts equally. Individual cases may qualify for different levels of compensation.
To qualify for a lawsuit, you typically need a meningioma diagnosis after using Depo-Provera for at least a year. Women who received a generic version of the drug or Depo-subQ Provera 104 (a lower-dose version) may also qualify.
