Social Media Addiction Settlement

Tech giants like Meta, Google, TikTok and Snapchat have not yet agreed to a global settlement for the thousands of active social media addiction lawsuits. Many of these companies, however, have repeatedly settled individual lawsuits as they near trial. Legal industry estimates suggest individual social media lawsuit settlements could range from $10,000 to $3 million or more.

Is There a Social Media Addiction Settlement?

So far, a global settlement has not been reached for social media addiction lawsuits. Thousands of these cases are active and have been grouped together both in federal multidistrict litigation and in California state court. New cases continue to be filed as this litigation expands.

Global settlement agreements often rely on the outcome of bellwether trials. These are test cases selected in litigations like this one, where thousands of lawsuits are active. Instead of going through the tedious process of taking all of those cases to trial, a handful of lawsuits considered to be good representatives of the wider claims in the litigation are selected for trial.

The outcome of the bellwether trials can play a major role in influencing settlement negotiations as both sides get a look at how their claims hold up in a courtroom.

Only one individual social media addiction trial has been completed so far, and it ended with Meta and Google being ordered to pay $6 million to a woman who developed serious mental health issues after using their apps at a young age.

More bellwether trials are anticipated in the coming months, which could mean settlement talks begin to pick up as more verdicts come in.

How Much Could a Social Media Addiction Lawsuit Be Worth?

Estimates in the legal industry suggest that the individual payout for a social media addiction lawsuit could range from $10,000 to more than $3 million.

This is a very wide range, and it’s due in part to the fact that many different types of social media addiction cases have been filed. Lawsuits over anxiety and depression claims may not command the same level of settlement as those involving eating disorders or suicide attempts, for example.

It’s also very important to understand that these figures are only estimates. No global settlement has been reached, and payouts depend on the individual details of each case.

Social Media Lawsuit Settlements and Verdicts

While no global settlement has been reached, social media companies have agreed to settlements in multiple individual cases before they reach trial.

Individual Social Media Cases and Settlements

Both Snap and TikTok settled out of a landmark trial held in 2026 involving a 20-year-old woman who began using social media at a young age and went on to develop serious mental health issues, including body dysmorphia.

Meta and Google opted to take the case to trial, where they were found negligent and ordered to pay a combined $6 million. Both companies are in the process of appealing that ruling.

A second trial was set to take place in July 2026 involving a 15-year-old Florida teen, but Snap, TikTok and Google agreed to settlements. The teen then dropped his cases with Meta as the only remaining defendant.

In August 2026, TikTok reached confidential settlements in several other cases that were approaching trial.

School District and State Social Media Cases

While thousands of lawsuits have been filed by families and individuals, school districts across the country are also suing social media companies over claims that they have fueled a mental health crisis across the country and left schools to deal with the fallout.

The first school district bellwether trial was supposed to begin in 2026, but Meta, Google, TikTok and Snap agreed to pay a combined $27 million to settle that case, according to Reuters.

More cases are expected to advance to trial in the coming months. It could be a positive sign for plaintiffs if tech giants continue to reach settlements instead of risking taking cases before a jury.

These companies are also facing pressure from state governments. In 2026, Meta was ordered to pay more than $900 million and make changes to its platform for New Mexico users following a lawsuit brought by that state’s attorney general.

Who Is Eligible for a Social Media Addiction Settlement?

To qualify for a settlement, you must first file a social media addiction lawsuit. These lawsuits are largely being filed on behalf of children, teens and young adults who were impacted by social media and experienced addiction. You may not be eligible to file if you are over the age of 26. Parents may be able to file on behalf of their child.

In order to file a lawsuit, you or your child must typically must have heavily used social media and experienced any of the following:
  • Severe anxiety
  • Depression
  • Body dysmorphia
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Self-harm
