Paraquat Lawsuit Settlement Amounts: What to Expect
Legal industry experts estimate paraquat settlement payouts could range from $20,000 to over $1 million. But this is speculative. A judge approved a qualified settlement fund in March 2026, but no final settlement has been reached as of August 2026.

Thousands of paraquat lawsuits have been filed over claims that exposure to the pesticide may be tied to the development of Parkinson’s disease. Paraquat is known to be highly toxic and has been banned in dozens of countries worldwide.
If you worked around paraquat and went on to develop Parkinson’s, you might be eligible to file a lawsuit and be part of a potential settlement.
What Is the Average Paraquat Lawsuit Settlement Amount?
Legal experts estimate that most paraquat settlements could fall between $20,000 and $1.5 million. Your payout depends on your injuries and financial losses. These numbers are only estimates. Details of a global settlement have not yet been released, but both sides are still negotiating to reach an agreement.
This settlement could cover thousands of ongoing lawsuits. In August 2026, there were 6,665 cases combined in a federal multidistrict litigation (MDL). MDLs allow courts to combine several similar lawsuits to make the legal process more efficient.
Syngenta, the largest manufacturer of paraquat, has settled some cases before. In 2021, the company agreed to pay $187.5 million to an undisclosed number of plaintiffs.
Legal experts and attorneys often group possible paraquat payouts into broad categories called “tiers.” They usually base these tiers on the amount of exposure, the stage of diagnosis and the strength of documentation.
| Tier 1 | $20,000 - $100,000 | Limited exposure duration, early-stage Parkinson’s, some documentation gaps. |
| Tier 2 | $100,000 - $500,000 | Significant occupational exposure, advanced diagnosis, documented lost wages and medical costs. |
| Tier 3 | $500,000 - $1 million+ | Long-term heavy exposure, severe Parkinson’s progression, strong documentation. |
The popular weed killer Roundup has been tied to cancer and faced thousands of lawsuits. In 2020, Roundup’s manufacturer, Bayer, agreed to pay roughly $10 billion to settle many of those cases.
Factors That Influence Paraquat Settlement Amounts
Several factors could affect the payout you receive from a paraquat settlement. These can include how much exposure you experienced, how bad your injury is, your age and how it affected your life and finances.
- Extent of Exposure:
- If you faced significant or long-term exposure to paraquat, you may have a stronger case. This may apply if you worked in agricultural settings where paraquat was sprayed or if you were around the pesticide regularly. In some cases, simply being near treated areas for long periods may be considered exposure. If you worked or lived near fields where paraquat was often used and were later diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, talk to an attorney to learn more about your options.
- Documentation Quality:
- Strong medical records, work history, pesticide application logs and expert testimony can make a big difference in your case. If you have clear records that connect Parkinson’s disease to paraquat exposure, your claim is usually stronger.
- Type of Exposure:
- People who directly handled or sprayed paraquat usually have stronger claims than those who were exposed indirectly or as bystanders. Both types may qualify, but cases involving indirect exposure often need more documentation to show the link between exposure and diagnosis.
- Injury Severity:
- The seriousness of your injury will play a role in your settlement amount. In dangerous product lawsuits, the most severe or life-altering injuries often result in larger payouts. The primary injury among the paraquat lawsuits is the development of Parkinson’s disease.
- Age at Diagnosis:
- Younger claimants may receive bigger settlements to account for long-term care or lost years.
- Lost Wages:
- If you missed work or are unable to work due to paraquat exposure, this might factor into your settlement amount.
- Medical Expenses:
- This can impact settlement amounts based on your cost of ongoing treatment, medication, support devices and more.
- Pain and Suffering:
- Your settlement may vary based on any emotional and physical hardship you endured. Remember that the individual details of each case are unique.
Who Qualifies for a Paraquat Settlement?
If you were exposed to paraquat and later developed Parkinson’s disease, you might be eligible for a settlement. This applies to people who worked with the pesticide, some farm workers, neighbors living near treated areas and family members of applicators who had long-term exposure.
If a family member was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease from paraquat exposure and has passed away, you may still be able to file a wrongful death claim for them. Since paraquat lawsuit eligibility rules vary by state, an attorney can review your situation and help you determine whether your family’s case qualifies.
When Will Paraquat Lawsuits Settle?
A global settlement for paraquat cases has not been reached yet. However, both sides have been negotiating since April 2025.
As of August 2026, the terms had not been finalized, and the MDL judge has repeatedly extended stays — temporary pauses on court proceedings — while both sides continued to negotiate. Stays are normal in mass tort cases like the paraquat MDL. They do not mean your claim has been dropped, but they can make the process feel slow.
In March 2026, the judge agreed to set up a Qualified Settlement Fund (QSF) — a special fund for settlement payments. This means they are likely preparing to pay people, but the rules are not yet finalized. After the settlement framework is completed, you will get a notice and instructions from your attorney if you have an active case.
Even if there is a settlement, people will not get paid right away. Once everything is decided, lawyers will contact the people who made claims. Settlements of this size often take months, or even longer, to go from agreement to individual payments.
This mass settlement would cover many cases, but some individual lawsuits may still be settled separately. If you have not filed a claim yet, there is still time. Drugwatch’s legal partners are still reviewing and accepting new paraquat cases.
Paraquat Lawsuit Updates 2026
As the paraquat litigation transitioned toward a settlement, there was a flurry of new developments surrounding the pesticide, including Syngenta ceasing production, one state banning paraquat, and the EPA reviewing its safety.
Syngenta Ceases Paraquat Manufacture (June 2026)
In March 2026, Syngenta announced that it would stop making paraquat worldwide by the end of June 2026. The company also closed its only factory for paraquat in Huddersfield, UK. Syngenta said it would keep selling paraquat until December 31, 2026, or until they run out, whichever comes first.
This decision does not settle ongoing lawsuits or ensure a global agreement, but it shows that there is growing pressure to find a solution, especially because other generic companies will keep making paraquat. People who have already filed claims do not need to do anything else and should keep working with their lawyers.
Vermont Becomes First State to Ban Paraquat (May 2026)
On May 26, 2026, Vermont Governor Phil Scott signed H.739 into law. Vermont is now the first U.S. state to ban the sale and use of paraquat. The ban starts on November 1, 2026, but there is a limited permit exception for some fruit and berry crops.
At least 12 other states have proposed similar laws. In addition, the California Department of Pesticide Regulation said in late 2024 that it had begun a formal reevaluation of paraquat under state law.
MDL Case Count: Current Active Paraquat Cases (August 2026)
As of August 2026, there were more than 6,665 active paraquat cases before Chief Judge Nancy J. Rosenstengel in the Southern District of Illinois MDL.
The case count has grown steadily since the MDL was formed, reflecting continued filing activity even as settlement negotiations are ongoing.
Settlement Stay Extended to Allow Continued Negotiations (2025-2026)
Chief Judge Rosenstengel has maintained a stay in the MDL since 2025. That means court proceedings are temporarily paused while both sides work toward a global settlement.
This stay has been extended several times since it began, with further extensions in September and December 2025 moving case deadlines into 2026. Plaintiffs who have filed cases will be notified by their attorneys when the stay ends or if a global settlement is reached.
Syngenta Settles Individual Philadelphia Case (July 2025)
While this would be a mass settlement to cover many cases, individual lawsuits may also be settled on their own. For example, in July, Syngenta settled a paraquat lawsuit just weeks before it was set to go to trial in Philadelphia.
Tentative Settlement Framework Reported (Early 2025)
In early 2025, both sides resolved to work toward a settlement for the thousands of paraquat lawsuits grouped together in federal court.
